Ethics

Social work is a value-based profession. This is e.g. described in IFSW and IASSW’s agreed definition of social work. The definition has a reference to values as human rights and social justice. Ethics is therefore fundamental in social work and ethical issues are high on IFSW’s agenda, as well as on the agenda of the member organisations.
IFSW adopted the first international code of ethics in 1976. In 1986 this code was supplemented by a declaration of ethical principles. In 1994 the two documents were merged into one basic ethical document “Ethics of social work – principles and standards”. At the same time the organisation established the “Permanent committee on Ethics”. In 2004 the IFSW and the IASSW agreed on and adopted a new ethical documents called “Ethics in Social Work; Statement of Principles.
