World Social Work Day - Tuesday 16 March 2010 - Making human rights real: the social work agenda

World Social Work Day 2010

People are making changes in their lives to improve their quality of life every day across the world - and social workers are there helping them. World Social Work Day is a celebration of these achievements and an opportunity to highlight what work still has to be done for people’s rights to be respected.

Wherever we live in the world, people are being harmed, abused and neglected and their civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights are being violated. Every day, social workers are helping individuals and groups of people in such situations, helping them to live a better life and to find ways to respect competing rights in complex situations.

Review of the International Definition of Social Work

The Definition of Social Work is almost 10 years in use. A joined IFSW and IASSW process has been in progress for the past years, discussing if and to what extend the present Definition shall be updated.

We invite all users of the definition to take part in the discussion, you might want to add/change something e.g. passion, critical, sustainable, etc. or just keep it as it is.

Your opinion matters! Take part in the digital survey. It takes max 20 minutes of your time! The survey is available in several languages - go to: www.eassw.org/definition.asp

The results will be discussed in the global meetings in Hong Kong in June 2010.

In preparation for the forthcoming 2010 Joint World Conference in Hong Kong, IFSW and its international partner organisations IASSW and ICSW are motivating social workers, social work educators and people involved in social development around the globe to build the Action Agenda for the next decade together. IFSW is encouraging these groups to take part in online discussions on the role of social work in eradicating poverty, on ageing and older adults and on service user/consumer involvement and social work.

The New Action Agenda for social work and social development in the next decade aims to create synergies among professionals to lead the global agenda for people-centered sustainable social progress.

Everybody can influence the New Action Agenda. The democratic process has just started! We as social workers, social work educators and people involved in social development can make a world of difference!

You can start discussing the papers on the role of social work in eradicating poverty and on ageing and older adults by clicking on the following links:
