2000 - Canada
In 2000 the IFSW petitioned the Canadian Government after having learnt that the country intended to introduce a more restrictive policy on immigration to prevent HIV-positive persons to settle in Canada.
"Where States prohibit people living with HIV/AIDS from longer- term residency due to concerns about economic cost, States should not single out HIV/AIDS, as opposed to comparable conditions, for such treatment, and should establish that such costs would indeed be incurred in the case of the individual alien seeking residency."
OUTCOME
IFSW received a response from the Canadian Government some time after our letter was sent. The Canadian Government did not introduce mandatory testing for Migrants to Canada.
