2004 - Grenada

In September 2004 IFSW received news of the devastating effects of the hurricane Ivan to Grenada. This included serious effects on the Grenada Prison according to a statement by the Governor General, in a radio broadcast, proclaiming a State of Emergency at the prison, declar-ing that the prison was ‘unliveable in’.
Further, news was received about an assault by the Regional Security Services on Sep-tember 21 with indiscriminate beatings and abuse of the prisoners and a chaotic situation with lack of shelter and sanitation.

IFSW approached Prime Minister of Grenada to guarantee the prisoners humane treatment and living conditions and that his government will bring to justice those responsible for the ill-treatment of the prisoners during this difficult times.
