IFSW STATEMENT ON THE DEVELOPING SWINE FLU: VULNERABLE POPULATIONS AT INCREASED RISK'Social workers around the world will perform a crucial role in responding to the anticipated swine flu pandemic', said David N Jones, IFSW President on 29 April 2009, speaking from the European social work conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia attended by almost 800 social workers, social work educators and social service administrators from most countries of Europe.

Global News
United Kingdom: Home care staff will be required to register promises England care services ministerUnited Kingdoms' Care services minister Phil Hope has pledged to “win back public confidence” in social care by extending compulsory registration to England’s 500,000 home care workers. Most do not hold social work qualifications and many have no qualifications at all.
The General Social Care Council will begin registering staff early next year on a voluntary basis before the scheme becomes mandatory. They will be required to uphold the same ethical standards as social workers and be open to disciplinary proceedings. The reform has been discussed for several years but has now been confirmed following a TV programme which exposed abuse of residents in their own homes by home carers.
New Guide for Civil Society Organisations on how to engage with the African child rights committeeThe two organisations Plan International and Save the Children Sweden have announced the publication “Advancing Children's Rights - A Guide for Civil Society Organisations on how to engage with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child”. Written by the child rights consultant Frances Sheahan, the Guide has been developed in collaboration with African civil society organisations, academics and members of the African Committee of Experts of the Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
New guide: The Un Special Rapporteur on the Right to HealthOn World Health Day, 7 April 2009, IFHHRO launched its new guide The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health: A Guide for Civil Society in The Hague (the Netherlands). IFHHRO has developed this practical Guide to aid civil society actors in becoming more involved in the work of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (in short: the right to health). Throughout the Guide there is a specific focus on the valuable role that health workers can play.
Water shortages are a growing problemAccording to the Economist magazine, the world is facing a growing water shortage. IFSW President David N Jones has already identified pressure on the supply of the basics of life - food, water and power - as a major crisis which will have significant social consequences in rich and poor countries, which is confirmed in this article. 'Social workers need to highlight the growing shortages of the basics of life', David Jones said. 'We must work with other professionals to minimise the dangerous social consequences of these shortages and to ensure that poorest do not pay the highest price.'
Social worker to be accredited in SingaporeOn April 2, 2009 the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan announced a Social Work accreditation board would be set up by his ministry, the National Council of Social Service and the Singapore Association of Social Workers.
It will accredit social workers based on their relevant qualifications, training and experience. It will also handle complaints, review training and conduct public education. Accredited social workers will have to renew their status every two years. Speaking at the Social Workers' Day celebrations at the Grassroots' Club in Ang Mo Kio, the minister urged the nearly 400 social workers present to get their qualifications formally recognised.
