Community Service Volunteers (CSV) was founded in 1962 by Mora and Alec Dickson who also founded the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). Their philosophy guides us today: everyone should be able to take part in the life of their community.

Cross Cultural Professional Exchange Program - Exchange International

Exchange International was created specifically for professionals working within the social services and human services fields. Our mission is to provide supported, on-the-job training experiences for international professionals seeking to broaden professional skills, develop global competencies and participate in cross-cultural exchange.

US Hero

A UNA-USA Campaign, in partnership with The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is an awareness building and fund-raising initiative dedicated to providing comprehensive, school-based support to orphans and vulnerable children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa.
Education is key to a child's future, but for orphans and vulnerable children, schools play a role far greater than academic learning. They serve as community resources where children can receive basic care and services — such as food programs, clean water, counselling and referral to other local and government services. HERO works in four African countries - South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Ethiopia - to provide holistic, school-based support for orphans and vulnerable children. HERO works with in-country partners, including local non-governmental organisations and UN agencies, to identify the critical needs of the schools in rural areas and to develop a "HERO package" of support for each school.

Children are routinely subject to misfortune beyond the loss of parents. They are at higher risk of being malnourished, sexually and physically abused, stigmatised and forced to work to support themselves and remaining family members. HERO has identified staying in school as the first line of defence against these ills. By enrolling in school, children whose welfare might otherwise be overlooked can gain access to services provided by the community and government.

Voluntary Service Overseas

Voluntary Service Overseas was founded by the late Alec and Mora Dickson with backing from Inter Church Aid (now Christian Aid) and the late Bishop of Portsmouth, who sent a letter to the Sunday Times to support his vision.

On May 15 1958 the first VSO volunteers (eight 18-year-old men) left the UK to give a year's voluntary service in developing countries - Ghana, Nigeria, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Sarawak. Some of the first volunteers are still in touch with VSO, which still has thriving programmes in Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia. Since then over 30,000 volunteers have served in over 70 countries.
