EU citizens' radio station launched |

The European Commission has announced the opening of a radio station to keep EU citizens up to date with news from Brussels and across Europe.
The multi-lingual station, with an annual budget of 5.8m Euros ($8.9m; £4.5m) is scheduled to begin broadcasting in April 2008. It will launch with 16 radio stations in 13 countries, broadcasting in 10 languages but the Commission hopes to increase coverage to all 23 official EU languages within five years.
The Commission says the broadcasts, which form a key part of the EU Communication Policy, will tackle increasing distrust among European citizens of the EU project.
Commission Vice-President in charge of communications Margot Wallström, and representatives of major European broadcasters said they welcomed the "enriching experience which the contributions and broader perspective of the consortium partners will bring to the citizens of the 27 countries of the EU in lively, well documented programmes on questions relating to Europe".
