"Development must benefit poor' says UN chief



UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said 2008 must be dedicated to bringing the benefits of globalisation to the "bottom billion" of the world's poor.

Speaking prior to the opening of the twelfth UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD-XII) in Accra, Mr Ban said that "in a globalizing world, we require an international economic environment that fosters development".

He said 2008 was to be a pivotal year in the global effort to meet the Millennium Development Goals and that UNCTAD-XII must as a matter of urgency promote financial policies that help meet these goals, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

"Today's UN cannot simply champion development, it must deliver every day on its promises," said Mr Ban.
