Pope Benedict XVI has told the UN that the promotion of human rights remains "the most effective strategy for eliminating inequalities between countries and social groups and for increasing security".
Speaking during a landmark visit to the USA, the Pope said that victims of hardship and despair can "becomes easy prey to the call of violence" and violate peace themselves.
He also reminded all states of their duty to protect their citizens from atrocities, and praised the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"The merit of the Universal Declaration is that is has enabled different cultures, theoretical and institutional models to converge around a fundamental nucleus of values," he said.
