Child protection social work in Australia faces a crisis |
 |
The President of the Australian Association of Social Workers Bob Lonne talks about the situation Australia faces with child protection workers. The fluctuation of these employees is enormous. One reason could be that they are poorly paid and that they are working in offices with toxic politics. As consequences of the problem the remaining workers cannot trust on long-term colleagues. Government departments are reluctant to release data but as Bob Lonne reports the lost of the employees in Child Protection work is at least 30 % a year and up to 70 % in two years. As a result of this awful situation, children see three or four different case workers in any given year.
The President of the Australian Association of Social Workers sees one problem in the small number of graduates and qualified social workers coming from universities. As a result many organisations engage people without the necessary qualifications. Bob Lonne concludes: “Families in trouble seek help but under the current system they get an investigation, and woe betide any parent where there is suspicion about the children because they will be removed with few questions asked, and little help rendered."
