New Guide for Civil Society Organisations on how to engage with the African child rights committee

The two organisations Plan International and Save the Children Sweden have announced the publication “Advancing Children's Rights - A Guide for Civil Society Organisations on how to engage with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child”. Written by the child rights consultant Frances Sheahan, the Guide has been developed in collaboration with African civil society organisations, academics and members of the African Committee of Experts of the Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

It is a Guide mainly targeting civil society organisations who want to work with the existing child rights structure in Africa for the implementation the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC). Adopted in 1990 by the OAU, the ACRWC is still not well known on the continent. The potential of the procedures of the Committee in charge of monitoring the Charter’s implementation is also unknown among most civil society organisations. This Guide attempts to fill this gap and to encourage greater participation by civil society in the work of the Committee.

Considering that the Guide may be revised in 2010 when there are more experience gained of the Committee procedures, this first edition is published as a PDF file and not printed in hard copies.
