United Kingdom: Home care staff will be required to register promises England care services minister

United Kingdoms' Care services minister Phil Hope has pledged to “win back public confidence” in social care by extending compulsory registration to England’s 500,000 home care workers. Most do not hold social work qualifications and many have no qualifications at all.

The General Social Care Council will begin registering staff early next year on a voluntary basis before the scheme becomes mandatory. They will be required to uphold the same ethical standards as social workers and be open to disciplinary proceedings. The reform has been discussed for several years but has now been confirmed following a TV programme which exposed abuse of residents in their own homes by home carers.
