ABOUT IFSW
IFSW President Gary Bailey
He is currently an Associate Professor at Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work, where he also holds an appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor at the Simmons School of Health Sciences. He also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Public Health.
At the School of Social Work he coordinates the Dynamics of Racism and Oppression as well as the Health and Aging sequence. Professor Bailey is the Chair of the Simmons College Black Administrators, Faculty and Staff Council (BAFAS); is a member of the Faculty Senate; is a member of the Simmons President’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council; co-Chaired the Simmons College Initiative on Human Rights and Social Justice; and chairs the School of Social Work Awards Committee
Professor Bailey was elected in 2010 the President of the International Federation of Social Work. He is the first person of color to hold this post and only the third North American to do so. He is a past president of the North American region of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) located in Berne, Switzerland having served in that role from 2003 until 2006.
He was appointed as the inaugural Chair of the Policy, Advocacy and Representation Commission (the PARC) in August 2006 at the IFSW Executive Committee meeting in Munich Germany in which he is responsible for the review of existing and the development of new policies; the IFSW social work representatives at the United Nations in Nairobi, Geneva, and New York City
He served on the board of the North American and Caribbean Association of Schools of Social Work representing the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE)
He is a past President of National NASW–USA(NASW) having served as President from 2003 until 2005. He was President-elect from 2002-2003. His tenure at NASW National has included serving as the NASW National 2nd Vice President from 2000-2002 and as the Associations Treasurer from 1995-1997. He was also the President of the Massachusetts Chapter of NASW from 1993-1995
Professor Bailey is currently the Chairperson of the National Social Work Public Education Campaign. He is a former member of the NASW-USA (NASW) Foundation Board of Directors. He was a member of the board of the NASW Insurance Trust (now Assurance Services, Inc.) the largest provider of insurance for professional social workers. He is on the Governing Board of the Boston Teachers Union School in Jamaica Plain, Mass; he is a board member of the Fenway High School in Boston.
Professor Bailey is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He was named Social Worker of the Year by both the National and Massachusetts NASW in 1998.He was made a Social Work Pioneer by NASW in 2005, making him the youngest individual to receive this honor and joining individuals such as Jane Adams and Whitney M. Young.
Professor Bailey received the Boston University School of Social Work Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Social Work in 1995. He received the Wayne S Wright Advocacy Award from the Multicultural AIDS Coalition in 1997; the Congressman Gerry Studds Visibility Award in 1996 from the Fenway Community Health Center in Boston and the Bayard Rustin Spirit Award from the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts in 1999; in 2006 he was named an Ambassador of Caring for the Needs of Diverse Families by the Center for Family Connections in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He received the 2007 Legacy of Caring Award from Devereux -Massachusetts; previous recipients of this award include the late David Liedermann of the Child Welfare League of America and the Kennedy Family. In 2008 he was the Cecil and Ida Green Honors Professor, at Texas Christian University; and he received the State Directors Award for Excellence in Social Work Leadership from the South Carolina Office of Public Health.
He has served on numerous Boards and Advisory groups including the Advisory committees for the Massachusetts Departments of Mental Health and Social Services. He chaired the AIDS Action Committee of Boston board of directors; was co-chair of the Children’s Hospital Community Advisory Board. He was a member of the board at the Phillip Brooks House at Harvard University; the Massachusetts Maternity and Foundling Hospital Foundation; United Homes for Children; the Wang Center for the Performing Arts; Success by Six United Way of Mass Bay and is a member of the Center for Family Connections Advisory Board in Cambridge, Mass.
In 2009 he was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority(MEFA). His term expires in 2013.
In June 2010 he was among 25 individuals honored by the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts whose contributions to the fight against AIDS over the last two-and-a-half decades have been invaluable. Their stories embody the theme of this year's AIDS Walk: Love, Hope, Honor and Action. From public health officials to grassroots activists, fundraisers to medical professionals, these 25 people represented the many communities that have come together to care for those affected by HIV/AIDS and to prevent new infections.
In May 2009 Professor Bailey was invited by the United States-Israel Educational Foundation (USIEF), to give a series of workshops and speeches throughout Israel as a part of the Funds outreach to African American leaders to visit Israel. The Fund was established in 1956 by an agreement between the governments of the United States and Israel, and administers the Fulbright educational exchange program in Israel.
He began his career at Family Service of Greater Boston in 1980 working in the Services for Older People program providing casework and other services to at risk elders and their families. He went on to hold numerous positions at Family Service until he left in 1994 to assume the position of Executive Director of Parent’s and Children’s Services in Boston.
Professor Bailey is a highly sought after trainer and consultant on topics which include board development, international social work practice, elder and family housing program development; issues pertaining to diversity; social justice and human rights; and working with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) communities.
He and his partner Richard McCarthy, President GLAD (Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders) Board of Directors and is a member of the Governor Deval Patrick’s Diversity Leadership Council, and their Bombay cat Grimaldi divide their time between their homes in Boston and Provincetown, Mass.
