IFSW, United Nations Commission – Team of New York, has submited an statement on the theme “Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century” to the Commission on the Status of Women of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – United nations, during the Sixty-fourth session
IFSW Secretary-General Rory Truell commended the Federation’s UN Commission for ensuring there is a social work voice at the highest level. He said, “The United Nations are increasingly aware of the sucess of social work’s contributions to the SDG objectives. Social work has a unique and essential role facilitating community self-led development with a strong ethical framework that promotes equality, rights and shared futures. The IFSW UN Commission brings these important messages to the highest level of political forums reflecting social work practice in communities throughout the world. IFSW was granted Special Consultative Status by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in is an obejtive of this Commission to represent a social work perspective to the UN and the UN Agencies and to work towards joint action based on social work principles. Representatives of the Un Commission highlight the social solutions that can be achieved through applying the profession’s principles and methodologies as a framework for achieving social justice, inclusive participatory democracy, sustainable peaceful societies, social transformation for equality and rights. Representatives are bound to constitution, definition, ethical principles and the policies of IFSW.
