The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) is seeking an Interim Secretary-General to lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Federation on a temporary basis. The role has arisen because of the extended leave of the permanent post-holder. This temporary appointment is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of the Federation and support its global mission of advancing social work and social justice.
About the Position
The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) is seeking a dynamic Interim Secretary-General to lead and manage the Federation’s operations, supporting its growth and global impact. Reporting to the President and accountable to the Executive Committee, the Interim Secretary-General will oversee leadership, administration, external representation, internal communications, and financial management. The post is supported by a small, skilled administrative team, the IFSW Global President and an active Global Executive Committee.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Representation
Work closely with the President and Executive leadership to deliver the Federation’s vision, strengthen international partnerships, and represent IFSW in key arenas, including media and the United Nations. - Organisational Development
Provide direction and support to the Executive Committee, membership, and all official units of IFSW. Ensure effective public relations, internal communication, and the legal and ethical integrity of the Federation. - Operational Management
Oversee the recruitment, supervision, and deployment of staff and contractors. Maintain all official records and facilitate efficient administrative systems. - Financial Stewardship
In collaboration with the Steering Group (a sub-committee of the Global Executive that includes the Treasurer) manage the Federation’s financial operations, budgeting, and revenue development strategies to sustain and expand IFSW’s impact. - Special Assignments
Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the President, contributing flexibly to the evolving needs of the Federation.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking an inspiring leader with strong management and diplomatic skills, international experience, and a deep commitment to social work values. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strategic thinking, excellent communication, and ethical leadership within an international organisational context. The candidate will be available and skilled to step into an interim role, sustain continuity and provide authentic leadership.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Leadership experience in an international or complex organisational setting
- Strong commitment to the values and principles of social work, including human rights, equity, and global solidarity
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English (French and Spanish are an asset)
- Proven experience in managing staff, budgets, and multi-stakeholder processes
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams and commissions across regions
- Strategic thinking and adaptability in dynamic environments
- An understanding of governance processes within international organisations or similar NGOs
- Submit a letter of support from their national association which is a member in good standing with IFSW
A background in social work is highly desirable.
