Malta recently celebrated a significant milestone in the realm of social work—the 20th anniversary of its esteemed Department of Social Work, University of Malta.
This joyous occasion brought together honorable professors, dedicated social workers, and aspiring students in a collective commemoration of two decades of impactful service to the community.
The conference served as a meaningful platform to recognize the remarkable achievements of the social work profession in Malta. The tireless efforts of social workers have not only left an indelible mark on the lives of most vulnerable people but have also contributed significantly to the overall well-being of the community.
The exchange of ideas, experiences, and insights during the conference created a vibrant atmosphere that underscored the collaborative spirit within the profession. It was a moment of reflection, acknowledging the challenges overcome and the milestones achieved in the relentless pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
The celebration provided an opportunity to discuss the identity of social work profession and the chart the course for the future. Engaging discussions centered around innovative approaches, evolving challenges, and the pivotal role of social work in addressing emerging societal issues.
The 20th-anniversary celebration of the Department of Social Work in Malta was more than a mere milestone—it stood as a testament to the dedication, resilience, and impact of the social work profession. The Department of Social Work extended a gracious invitation to the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) Europe, facilitated by Ms. Sue Vella, head of the department.
Participating in this celebration, I had the honor of connecting with social workers in Malta, gaining insight into their understanding of the identity of the social work profession and their vision for the next steps in enhancing the well-being of the people of Malta.
During my visit, I had the privilege of meeting with the Minister of Social Policy and Children’s Rights in Malta, Honorable Michael Falzon. Our discussion focused on strengthening the profile of professional social workers in Malta. I appreciate the positive atmosphere of the meeting and look forward to future cooperation. I also had a productive working meeting with the Maltese Association of Social Workers, where we discussed strategies for strengthening the role of social workers in delivering social services. I express my gratitude to Michael Farrugia, Charlene Martin, Kerry Hermitage, Carly Zarb, Maria Borg Pellicano, Alexia Baldacchino – reprisenting the Maltees Association of Social Workers, and to all social workers in Malta.
