Celebration of World Social Work Day in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone Association of Social Workers in collaboration with Social work Research and Community practice and the Young Africa social workers Sierra Leone chapter celebrate WSWD

World social work day is celebrated in recognition of social workers as champions for social justice, self determination and human rights. This year’s theme is ‘Promoting the importance of human Relationships’. The celebrations this year will be taken to the rural communities to high light where social work meets social development. This day has never been celebrated with the majority of the people living in abject poverty but they continue to use indigenous knowledge, skills, experience and local resources to respond to the challenges they grapple with on a daily basis. Their strength and expertise should be recognized as experts through experience. This day will be celebrated with a series of speeches and workshops that draw attention to the relevance of human relationships and impacts of community action through social work led initiatives to re-enforce social justice and sustainable practices through today.

This day has the following objectives:

  • Highlight the importance of human relationship in social work action;
  • Strengthen partnerships and collaborations with existing contacts, establish new ones with local chiefs, traditional healers, women’s society’s, men’s society’s, youth groups, children’s clubs and functional organizations;
  • Spread knowledge about what communities are doing referred to as African social work, its values, principles and methods amongst participants, local councils, government and allied local and international NGO’S;

Plan Activities

In joining the world to observe this day, Social workers in Sierra Leone have proposed the following activities that are relevant to this celebration. 

  1. Media engagements

This activity shall include radio talk shows focusing on Disseminating knowledge about what Social Workers have achieved so far, and using stories to talk about how important social workers are in helping people change their lives.

  1. Community Engagements

Conduct workshops to promote the importance of human relationship to Strengthen partnerships and collaboration with existing contacts; establish new ones to spread knowledge about Social Work role, its values, principles and methods in bringing about sustainable transformational change.

  1. Social Work March

This match will show case the values \

of human relationship and the relevance of promoting it thereby bringing together people of different socio economic backgrounds to promote inclusiveness and social diversity.
