On 20 November 2025, the Social Workers Association of South Africa (SASWA) held its inaugural launch at the Auditorium, Future Africa Campus, University of Pretoria. The event marked a historic milestone in reuniting the nation’s social work profession. Over 1,000 registered social workers participated in the election process, while more than 100 joined the launch online, demonstrating strong national engagement. “This launch represents a new era of unity and collaboration for social workers across South Africa,” said Professor Antoinette Lombard, Steering Committee Chair.
SASWA was originally founded in 2007 but experienced fragmentation and inactivity due to internal differences. Renewed advocacy by social workers, supported by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), prompted Professor Antoinette Lombard to collaborate with representatives from various groups to reconstitute the association. The launch officially established a unified platform for social workers across the country.
The Steering Committee, chaired by Professor Antoinette Lombard, coordinated preparations since June 2024. The Interim Constitution and Rules, presented by Mr. Andre Viviers, were shared with attendees, who were informed that the draft will be refined with ongoing member contributions. “We encourage all members to actively contribute to shaping the constitution to reflect the collective voice of social workers,” stated Mr. Andre Viviers.
SASWA’s first national executive was elected through an online voting system from 7 to 17 November 2025, with voting restricted to verified registered members. Over 1,000 social workers cast their votes, and results were announced during the launch. The five-member executive team represents multiple regions of South Africa, blending young professionals with highly experienced practitioners, including individuals with over 40 years of service. The executives pledged to work inclusively, transparently, and in the best interests of all members.
Oluwatoni Adeleke, President of IFSW Africa, addressed participants, highlighting the benefits of affiliating with IFSW, including opportunities for regional and global partnerships, advocacy, policy engagement, professional development, and networking. Following the presentation, SASWA members expressed eagerness to join IFSW and engage with the international social work community. “Joining IFSW opens doors to global collaboration, advocacy, and professional growth,” said Oluwatoni Adeleke, President of IFSW Africa.
The newly elected executives responded and said “We are committed to representing the diverse voices of social workers nationwide and advancing the profession for the benefit of all communities,” said one of the newly elected executives.
The launch of SASWA signals a renewed era of collaboration, professional pride, and strengthened governance. The unified association provides social workers a platform to actively participate in shaping policies, advancing the profession, and contributing to the well-being of communities across South Africa.
