It took a while, but here I am – finally gathering my thoughts for the IFSW Blog. As a professional social worker administrating the IFSW Connect website, it seemed logical to me to begin blogging with the idea that consumes our energy and challenges our imaginations: international social work. One of the reasons it took a while for me to get started is that I was feeling overwhelmed by the concept! Social Work is so big. It blankets such an enormous expanse of issues and activities, and then we add the word “international”. Where does one start? And what role can IFSW Connect play?
As social workers we are spread thin, often at the front line of critical social issues affecting individuals, communities and institutions. Whether we are working in individual or community practice, policy or programme development, education and research, or social development, it is the intersection of these interventions and the common factors that underpin them which weaves the complex fabric of international social work.
