The 16th Eurasia Forum of Social Workers opened on 2 July 2025 at Yeungnam University in the Republic of Korea with a powerful address by the IFSW President, Joachim Mumba. The event, which has drawn social work professionals, students and policymakers from across the Eurasia region and beyond, is being held under the theme “Building Bridges for Intergenerational Cooperation: Social Welfare in the Context of Population Change.”
In his opening remarks, President Mumba highlighted the urgency of addressing population shifts and demographic challenges through collaborative, cross-generational strategies rooted in the values of social justice, dignity and inclusion.
“This Forum is more than a meeting, it is a manifestation of our global commitment to human dignity, equity and sustainable development,” Mumba stated. “We are gathered here because we recognise that social work is not only about responding to the needs of today, but also about shaping the futures of tomorrow.”
Reflecting on the power of intergenerational dialogue, Mumba invoked a traditional Korean proverb: “If ten people each add a spoonful, there is enough rice for one person to eat” as a metaphor for solidarity and collective contribution. He praised the forum for providing a space to critically engage with complex social issues while nurturing meaningful professional exchange. “This forum reminds us of the power we hold when we listen to one another across generations and geographies. It is here that new solutions are born and longstanding values are reaffirmed,” Mumba said.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to the organisers, especially Mr Sug Pyo Kim, for their leadership and vision, as well as to the Republic of Korea for its continued support of social work. He also extended gratitude to the IFSW Asia Pacific region for its steadfast commitment to advancing the profession.
Looking ahead, Mumba encouraged participants to maintain their connections and momentum by attending the next global gathering: “I warmly invite all of you to the 2026 Joint World Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development in Nairobi, Kenya. Karibu sana, you are most welcome as we continue our global journey together.”
The Eurasia Forum continues throughout the week with keynote speeches, panel discussions and workshops designed to foster cross-cultural learning and build strategies that promote social well-being amidst population change.
