The Education Commission of the International Federation of Social Workers, expresses its steadfast support for the social work students and staff who have courageously participated in the pro-peace encampments at Columbia University and other major universities across the United States.
These mobilizations, reminiscent of the anti-war movements of the 1960s and 70s, underscore the enduring commitment within the field of social work to uphold the principles of self-determination and peace. It is heartening to see our future social workers lead by example, demonstrating their commitment to social justice and the betterment of global communities amidst calls for a ceasefire in Palestine.
However, we are deeply concerned by the reports of police violence against peaceful demonstrators, particularly within academic institutions where freedom of speech and assembly should be fiercely protected.
The involvement of law enforcement in these settings not only threatens the safety of our students and staff but also contradicts the very values that form the foundation of Higher Education. We strongly condemn these actions and call for universities to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff to express their views and advocate for peaceful resolutions. As social workers, it is our ethical duty to stand in solidarity with those who seek justice and peace, and we urge academic institutions and law enforcement agencies to respect and protect the rights of those engaged in such critical expressions of democracy.
