Standing with Communities Affected by Recent Cyclones and Floods in the Asia-Pacific Region
In Sumatra, Indonesia and in Sri Lanka, a series of severe rainfall disasters triggered by multiple cyclones has resulted in the tragic loss of many lives, with hundreds of people still reported missing. In addition, large-scale flooding has struck Thailand and Malaysia, causing extensive damage across multiple regions.
We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by these devastating events.
These disasters once again confront us with the undeniable reality that natural hazards intensified by climate change and extreme weather are increasingly severe and frequent.
Communities across the affected areas are facing complex and long-term challenges, including the loss of housing and local infrastructure, the death of family members and loved ones, and physical and psychological impacts associated with prolonged displacement. There is an urgent need for prompt, sustained, and comprehensive support for all who are struggling in these circumstances.
As social workers, guided by our core principles of upholding human rights and supporting the rebuilding of lives, we reaffirm our commitment to providing professional, ethical, and compassionate support. We remain dedicated to ensuring that every individual affected can restore their dignity and regain a sense of safety and hope for the future.
We also call for strengthened systems in which society as a whole learns from these experiences, prepares for future risks, and supports one another so that the pain caused by these disasters is never forgotten.
We sincerely wish for the safety, recovery, and emotional well-being of all those affected, and for the earliest possible restoration of their daily lives.
