Statement of Sympathy Following the Earthquake in Afghanistan
The International Federation of Social Workers Asia-Pacific Region expresses its profound sorrow at the devastating earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August 2025. The disaster has resulted in the tragic loss of over 2,000 lives, the injury of many more, and the destruction of communities and livelihoods. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and our heartfelt sympathy to all those who are enduring loss, injury, and displacement.
We particularly acknowledge and commend our colleagues in the Afghanistan Social Workers Association, who, despite immense challenges, continue to serve affected individuals and communities with dedication and compassion. Their unwavering commitment reflects the core values of the social work profession—upholding human dignity, providing care in times of crisis, and fostering resilience in the face of adversity.
The social work profession in the Asia-Pacific Region stands in steadfast solidarity with the people of Afghanistan. We also honor the tireless efforts of first responders, humanitarian workers, and community leaders who are engaged in rescue, relief, and recovery operations.
This tragedy underscores the urgent need for international cooperation. We call upon the global community—governments, humanitarian organizations, and civil society—to work together in mobilizing immediate assistance and to support Afghanistan’s longer-term recovery and reconstruction. Solidarity and coordinated action are essential to ensuring that those most affected receive the support they need to rebuild their lives and communities.
Guided by the principles of social justice, human rights, and compassion, the International Federation of Social Workers Asia-Pacific Region reaffirms its commitment to stand with Afghanistan during this time of profound grief and in the challenging path toward recovery.
With deepest sympathy and respect,
