The International Federation of Social Workers is deeply shocked and saddened by the two attacks which occurred in Kampala on an evening that should have been an otherwise joyous one for individuals and families to watch the finals of the 2010 World Cup. We are even more so now that the attacks appear to have been terrorist actions. The attacks are a challenge to the very idea of a world body whose goal is to nurture peace and co-operation through shared activities and cooperation.
We join with our social work colleagues who we know also mourn the loss of lives in this barbarous attack, and our thoughts are also with the victims ,their families as well as with the people of Uganda during this time.
We call on the social work profession and its representatives around the world to continue – true to our shared value for human rights and human dignity – to support the ideals of mutuality and respect for all. As the world watches and mourns these tragic and senseless acts along with our sisters and brothers in Uganda, we, as social workers are called upon more than ever to foster mutual understanding and development among the peoples and nations of this battered world.
