The Social Workers’ Association of Zambia Act, 2022 was passed this week. It represents a significant effort by the Social Workers’ Association of Zambia to ensure that the profession and its essential role are protected under law.
Joachim Mumba, General Secretary of the SWAZ and the IFSW Africa Regional Vice President said, ‘This is a great step forward for social work and the communities we serve across our country. The Act specifically recognises the role of the Association in overseeing the registration of social workers and regulating professional conduct. This ensures that the profession will have an ongoing strong position and the ability to update social work education and practice standards when required.”
IFSW Secretary-General, Rory Truell congratulated SWAZ and commented, “This is a major development. Earlier approaches to social work registration have, in too many cases, resulted in the formation of bodies that are separated from the national association. Too often this has had an unintended consequence of depowering the social work profession and limiting the scope and development of the profession. The passing of this Act is not only a significant achievement for the people of Zambia, but it is also for the global social work profession, as an example for other national associations to adapt and take forward in their own countries.”
