IFSW is encouraging social work scholars to contribute to a new online publication by the UN Research Institute for Social Development.
UNRISD is inviting post-graduate students to send innovative contributions to its new Young Scholars Think Piece Series. The Series aims to provide promising young researchers with an opportunity to present their research on social development on a wider platform than is possible within a university setting, thereby contributing to the diversity of ideas within the development community.
Preference is given to original pieces offering alternative perspectives, highlighting marginalized viewpoints and bringing neglected issues to the fore. Think pieces can be based on previously written essays, dissertations or theses. The think pieces are published on the UNRISD website and promoted through its social media networks. Successful participants will also receive a certificate, in pdf, to print out or use electronically.
IFSW Secretary General Rory Truell encouraged young social work scholars to think seriously about making a submission. ‘It is really important that the contribution of social work and social work research is seen and heard in international arenas’, he said. ‘Our Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development makes the connections between social realities, social work practice and the global economic environment. I encourage social work scholars to make those links visible through research studies which show the impact of economics on daily life and the contribution of social work to social and economic well-being’, Rory concluded.
If you are a post-graduate student, or if you are a member of faculty who would like to encourage a promising student, please see the Young Scholars Think Piece Series page for more information on how to submit an entry.
The deadline for submission is 21 March 2014, and importantly, contributions must be endorsed by a member of faculty who is familiar with the field.
First Edition: Extractive Industries and Social Development
The Young Scholars Think Piece Series will take place in thematically organized, time-bound editions. This current first edition has a submission period from February to March 2014 and is based on the theme of Extractive Industries and Social Development.
Young scholars are therefore invited to submit think pieces of up to 2,000 words that speak to issues relevant to social development in mineral-rich contexts and/or related to extractive industries such as:
- Human rights
- Environment
- Business/Corporate Social Responsibility
- Migration
- Gender
- Children
- Social Policy
- Social Development
- Communities/Local Development
- Indigenous Peoples
