The Social Work History Network (UK) and the Social Welfare History Group (USA) are pleased to announce an upcoming online event on 24 September 2024, at 19:30 BST (UK) / 14:30 EDT (USA). This event will explore the intricate relationship between social work and socio-political dynamics, focusing on both complicity and resistance within the profession. One of the speakers will be Vasilios Ioakimidis, IFSW Global Education Commissioner, who will speak on the importance of learning from the past to shape the future of social work. His presentation will address social work’s contested histories and the profession’s role in resisting oppression and transforming through social movements.
Further speakers include:
- Jane McPherson (USA), examining one social worker’s role in the destruction of a Black community during the 1960s in Athens, Georgia.
- Gianinna Munoz-Arce (Chile), discussing the impacts of political violence on social work in Chile.
- Mimi Abramovitz (USA), reflecting on how social workers can navigate the current global threats to democracy.
