The following outcome statement has been endorsed by the participants of the IFSW Africa Region Conference 2023.
In the spirit of Ubuntu, the IFSW Africa Region Conference 2023, held at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, brought together a diverse group of social work professionals, academics, policymakers, and students. Under the overarching theme of “Emerging Social Problems in Africa: The Response of Social Work Practice,” the conference addressed critical issues facing the continent and explored innovative solutions grounded in the principles of Ubuntu and the aspirations of the People’s Charter.
The conference delved into subthemes that ranged from strengthening the social service workforce, protecting children and vulnerable groups, professionalising social work, and addressing mental health, to the importance of rights, well-being, and care for older persons. Participants shared experiences, best practices, and innovative approaches to these pressing challenges, emphasising the need for an eco-social approach that aligns with the People’s Charter’s vision of sustainable and equitable development.
The discussions consistently echoed the principles of the People’s Charter and the African philosophy of Ubuntu. The conference underscored the importance of collective responsibility, interconnectedness, and mutual respect in addressing social and ecological challenges. The outcomes emphasised that social work in Africa should strive not only to solve immediate social issues but also to contribute to building a just and sustainable world.
The unique challenges of social work in Africa, such as dealing with the aftermath of conflicts, poverty, and climate change impacts, were highlighted. The conference recognised the critical role of social workers in advocating for policy changes, providing direct support to affected populations, and leading community-based initiatives that promote resilience and empowerment.
The insights and resolutions of the IFSW Africa Region Conference 2023 are intrinsically aligned with the Africa Union Agenda 2063, a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 40 years. The conference discussions and outcomes resonated with the Agenda’s aspirations, particularly in fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development. The role of social work in achieving these goals is critical, especially in the context of strengthening social service systems, advocating for social justice, and promoting human rights.
