Book Launch (Online): School Social Work in Sub-Saharan Africa: Issues, Challenges & Prospects

Information Type: NewsTopic: IFSW, Social Work

March 6, 2025

We are pleased to invite you to the online book launch of School Social Work in Sub-Saharan Africa: Issues, Challenges & Prospects on Friday 21 March 2025 at 13:00 – 14:00 Central Africa Time/CAT (11:00 – 12:00 UTC).

School Social Work in Sub-Saharan Africa: Issues, Challenges & Prospects brings together compelling arguments and evidence demonstrating why the well-being of children must be a top priority for African societies. Drawing on both global child-rights conventions and traditional African philosophies like Ubuntu, the editors and contributors highlight the many challenges young people encounter today—including violence, bullying, teenage pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse, and HIV/AIDS. These hardships are intensified by modernization, urbanization, and widespread corruption, all of which undermine communal values that once protected the most vulnerable. Against this backdrop, the book makes a powerful case for embedding social work services within every school, asserting that professional intervention can mitigate many of these threats and nurture healthier, safer learning environments.

Equally important, the publication calls for stronger partnerships among governments, policy makers, educators, and social work practitioners. Its chapters underscore that children deserve evidence-based interventions, robust legal frameworks, and well-resourced social services. By detailing real-world case studies, practical strategies, and proven policy approaches, the book encourages a unified resolve to safeguard and empower every child. Ultimately, School Social Work in Sub-Saharan Africa serves not only as an advocacy tool but also as a pragmatic resource for those committed to a child-centered vision of sustainable development—one in which the voices of children are heard, their rights respected, and their welfare made paramount.

Host: Joachim Mumba, IFSW President
Editors: Rodreck Mupedziswa, Noel Garikai Muridzo and Samuel Lisenga Simbine
