May 14, 2022 at 7:31 pm in reply to: 11.2 Report on People´s Global Summit. Co-building a new eco-social world: Leaving no one behind #50960It is really a qualitative and quantitative leap that IFSW has taken!!!!
Working with new partners has been enriching and strengthens the collective construction and voice of Social Work.
The People’s Summit will be a historic event!
It has been a work that has been going on for years, when we started a consultation process in 2019, then at the World Conference 2020 and permanently in the working group with our IFSW representatives. My appreciation and thanks to all those who worked hard to have a Global Agenda that expresses the most relevant issues to address from Social Work and Social Development.
Thanks to the treasurer for the report. Thanks to Rory and our accountant, Marlise, for working as a team to look after our finances.
May 14, 2022 at 7:19 pm in reply to: 10.1 Motion to replace the current Constitutional Article 12c #50946Hello everyone: I think this is an important debate. The central question is whether we are thinking about a power struggle or we are more interested in democratising the decision-making spaces and guaranteeing the participation of members who comply with the IFSW, and for some reason (usually financial) cannot participate. Our Federation has been democratising and we support democracy and the participation of all: leaving no one behind…as the Global Agenda and the motto of the World People’s Summit says …. I believe that this is the way forward….
May 14, 2022 at 3:54 pm in reply to: 12.1 The Role of Social Workers in Advancing a New Eco-Social World #50787Hello everyone! very interesting comments, which undoubtedly contribute to enrich the document! It is an excellent initiative and a great job!!!
Of the options proposed by Ana, I am inclined to option 2. Propose a motion requesting that the policy document be forwarded to the Executive for finalisation considering the contributions of the members listed in this agenda item.Thank you very much dear colleague! In spite of the distances, we remain united!!!
What beautiful words! I am very grateful to have worked these years for our Federation and to be with you! All my gratitude to you!
Gracias estimado Kalus!!
July 17, 2020 at 11:12 pm in reply to: Global solidarity : Demand the abolition of illegitimate debt- Debt justice #40886I agree, Maria! It’s a key issue! Thank you for bringing these reflections to this space of collective debate.
Thank you, Gary, for your profound reflections. I totally agree with you! For this capitalist-racist-patriarchal social order, it is clear that some lives are “worth more than others” hence exclusion, racism, femicide, xenophobic killings, exploitation, etc. To say “all lives matter” is a strategy of diluting and making invisible these oppressions, inequalities and deaths.
Thank you for these reflections! I believe that our Agenda should take into account the approach from the “intersection” of gender/race/class in order to encompass all the power devices that oppress millions of human beings. Inequalities are interrelated and mutually reinforcing!
July 16, 2020 at 8:54 pm in reply to: Cooperación entre países desarrollados y países en desarrollo: ODS N° 10 #40744Thank you, dear Claudia! I’ll get the book!
I agree, Maria. Solidarity challenges the logic of markets, the idea of “every man for himself” and the individualism promoted by neo-liberal policies. Solidarity is a powerful engine for collective action. Thinking of the other, of others, together with others. Work together.
Thank you for bringing the reflections of Dr. Kirchner, who also told us “without political action there is no social change”. We need to think of strategies that not only solve particular cases or situations but also see how we can collectively influence transformative political action. I always say that “social conquests are the product of collective struggles and not of individual actions”. Social rights are one of the horizons of Social Work.
Thinking about the separation between person-community-society is the product of a positivist and fragmented vision of reality. People are the singular expression of wider social groups. There is a co-construction and co-dependence between people, communities, societies. We transform reality and reality transforms us. Thank you all for these thoughts.
Thank you for this input. Gender is a key issue that we need to address. Despite progress, we continue to live in a patriarchal and androcentric order. Gender-based violence has been on the rise as have femicides. Gender inequalities prevent the strengthening of democratic systems and oppress half of humanity’s population.
Thanks to the team of the secretariat for being able to solve the problem and that everyone can express their ideas in this space. It is wonderful to share these ideas. Thank you, Rory, for making a wonderful synthesis of the keynote speakers. Dr. Kirchner also said “no change without political action. This political action has to be with the communities.
Also today in the panel from the LAC Region a panelist said we have to talk about “Good Living or Living Well” (a philosophy of indigenous peoples) rather than “Development” since many times development is not for everyone, but for a few. For example, Chile is considered a developed country with economic growth, yet it is the country with the greatest inequality and concentration of wealth in the region.July 16, 2020 at 8:01 pm in reply to: To resist authoritarian ruling and safeguard human rights and social justice! #40722Thank you all for such important reflections! Institutional violence (militarization and abuse of power by the police, authoritarianism, abuse of power by the state and the institutions that should protect us, is a very important issue for Social Work. Institutional violence violates human rights and weakens democracy, not only as a form of government, but also as a way of life!
What important reflections!! Thank you for this! In LAC we talk about the need to “build popular power” so that the people, the communities, the individuals, can participate in decision making collectively. This allows us to think of citizenship as “the right to have rights”.
July 16, 2020 at 7:43 pm in reply to: Cooperación entre países desarrollados y países en desarrollo: ODS N° 10 #40712I think the “South” is a very powerful metaphor. It is not a geographical place, but in our LAC Region it is considered a metaphor for the human suffering caused by colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy. There are sures in the nortes and nortes in the sures. Haiti is an example of the history of plundering, expropriation and colonization of this people.
I agree that poverty and social inequalities are the result of political decisions. We need more education in economics and finance and an understanding of how financial capitalism works so that we do not fall into the trap of blaming people for the situation they are in. Poverty, unemployment, exploitation are all related to this system that excludes and marginalizes the majority of people and benefits only a few. This is a key issue in reversing situations of social injustice!
July 16, 2020 at 7:28 pm in reply to: Global Employment Policy to Protect employment of Social Workers #40704Thank you all for contributing your views! As mentioned by David Jones you can get information on this topic at our Global Conference. The working conditions of social workers is a key issue. We cannot defend people’s rights if our rights as workers are being violated. This is a challenge that we have to continue to address and think about collective strategies.
Thank you, Ruth, for your thoughts! I keep thinking… in the LAC region we use the word “resistance”. Our native peoples, our most vulnerable populations have historically resisted the onslaught of different power devices (colonization, racism, austerity policies in social services, etc). This is the capacity of the people to remain standing in spite of everything! It is the capacity to survive adverse situations and continue fighting for a better world.
I agree with you, Ruth. It is important to problematize, to revise, to know the different meanings that the word solidarity has in different contexts, cultures, etc. I think it is a very important issue for our Global Agenda, since solidarity is an opinion of the hyper-individualism promoted by Neoliberalism. For Latin America and the Caribbean, solidarity implies thinking about rights, collective action, social justice, greater representation and democratization. Co-constructing social transformation together with our peoples implies solidarity.

July 16, 2020 at 7:02 pm in reply to: Political action: most problems require political solutions #40692Thank you for such an important contribution. I agree, Maria, that we cannot separate the profession from politics, from influencing political decisions. Politics generates the most structural changes in a society. The profession has a political dimension. Our practices are not neutral, they can favour emancipation processes or they can favour the status quo. It is important to always bear in mind the importance of politics and political action by Social Work. We need to have greater participation in social movements and social organizations. Thank you all for such important reflections!
Thank you Maria and Vinita for your comments. I agree with you. We are a profession that is always on the front line. We need to strengthen our voices, networks, and professional organizations to get more recognition for the work of social workers. We have the skills and competencies. We need to find better collective strategies to build a powerful voice and influence policy decisions
Thank you Larry for your comments and input. We are currently working on researching the working conditions of social workers. There’s a presentation at our conference about it. It’s definitely a topic that cuts across the entire professional spectrum.
Thank you for your input, everyone. Without a doubt, these are very important issues that point to discrimination (by gender, sexuality, social class, ethnicity, etc.)

July 12, 2020 at 3:26 am in reply to: 13.1 Social Work and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals #39522For those who are participating for the first time in our World Assembly, I would like to tell you that the documents, presented by our Global Commissioners, have taken at least a year of intense work, where the Commissioners ask the Regions (through their Regional Commissioners) for their contributions and input, in order to ensure that we have the multiplicity of voices and views of Social Work. Thank you Priska for the commitment you have assumed and the professionalism in everything you do. As President of IFSW my recognition to your work!
Thank you very much dear Viktor and Jenny!
Great work by the Interim Education Commission on Global Education Standards! It has been an intense and enriching work! The complexity of the meanings that each language gives to the concepts is a challenge. Thank you Vasilios for coordinating this collective work!
Thank you, dear Klaus! Of course, I agree with you. The 2019 report is complete in the financial report section. I agree that we need to detail so much work done by us in 2020 and nuclear all the information for a better and greater understanding. Thank you for your suggestions!
Dear Rose and Irene, great report, congratulations! It was really a pleasure to hear everything you have done in the region. As President of the IFSW, I would like to thank you for the great work done in these two years and for the contributions and debates that we were able to share in the World Executive. You are a true pride in the profession!
Dear Priska, it was a great pleasure to hear your report. As always, you have done a wonderful job as IFSW representative at the United Nations. Thanks to your contributions and commitment, today our Federation has a stronger voice at the UN. As President of IFSW, I am very proud of you and the members of this Commission.
Dear Kathy and Jan, wonderful report! It was truly a great honor for me to work with you on the World Executive. As President of IFSW, I would like to congratulate you and recognize the great work done in the region. We will continue to walk together in the search for social justice, the fight against patriarchy and racism! Great work!
Dear Robyn Corrigan and ShannonPakura, It was really exciting to hear the report. As President of IFSW I am very happy and proud to learn from the wisdom of indigenous peoples and to have a strong voice within our Federation. You have done a great job. I had the pleasure of meeting you at the meeting we organized in Calgary, Canada. I support the report and congratulate you on this important initiative!
Thank you all for such generous words of recognition for the work done. I am very happy and excited to see so many social workers from different parts of the world, actively participating in this World Assembly. This platform has allowed us to raise barriers and build bridges between us. United Social Work will never be defeated!
July 11, 2020 at 7:52 pm in reply to: 7.1 Membership Application from the Republic of the Congo #39171It is wonderful to see the support of our members for the application of a new association of social workers. The IFSW family is growing day by day!
It is a great joy to know that you support the admission of a new member to our Federation. IFSW is getting bigger every day and its voice is more and more powerful.
It is a great joy for IFSW to see the support of our members for this request from Mexico. IFSW is growing day by day. Without a doubt, the intention of a new organization to join our Federation fills us with pride and we celebrate it.
