August 5, 2026

The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) – Africa Region is pleased to announce the winners of the 2026 Small Grants Initiative, dedicated to strengthening advocacy for the legislative recognition of the social work profession across Africa.

Five National Associations of Social Workers have been awarded grants of $500 each to support their advocacy strategies. These grants will empower associations to advance legislation that formally recognizes social work as a profession, ensuring that social workers operate under clear legal frameworks that protect both practitioners and the communities they serve.

Grant Recipients

  • Botswana National Association of Social Workers
  • Ghana Association of Social Workers
  • Rwanda National Association of Social Workers
  • Nigeria Association of Social Workers
  • National Association of Social Workers in Malawi

Statement from IFSW Africa

“The recognition of social work through legislation is vital for building resilient communities and safeguarding vulnerable populations,” said the President of IFSW Africa Region, Oluwatoni Adeleke Olubitan. “We are proud to support these National Associations as they lead advocacy efforts that will elevate the profession and strengthen social justice across the continent.”

About the Initiative

The Small Grants Initiative reflects IFSW Africa’s commitment to advancing social justice, welfare, and community well-being. By investing in advocacy for legislative recognition, IFSW Africa is helping to ensure that social workers are empowered to deliver effective services under a recognized legal framework.
