The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) expresses its deepest solidarity with the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquake that has affected communities across the country.
Our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones, been injured, displaced, or whose homes and livelihoods have been impacted by this tragedy.
In times of disaster, social workers play an essential role in supporting affected individuals, families, and communities. They are often among the first to respond, providing psychosocial support, coordinating emergency assistance, protecting vulnerable people, and helping communities begin the long process of recovery and rebuilding.
IFSW stands in full solidarity with the Venezuelan social work profession and with every organisation and volunteer currently working tirelessly on the ground. We recognise the extraordinary commitment, compassion, and professionalism demonstrated by social workers during times of crisis, often under extremely difficult circumstances.
IFSW President Eva Ponce de Leon said:
“At times like these, the strength of our global community is measured by how we stand with one another. To the people of Venezuela and to every social worker responding to this disaster, I want to say: you are not alone. The International Federation of Social Workers stands beside you in solidarity and remains committed to supporting your efforts to protect lives, restore dignity, and help communities recover.“
IFSW Latin America and Caribbean Regional President Jorge Arturo Sáenz Fonseca added:
“Our region knows both the devastating impact of natural disasters and the remarkable resilience of our communities. Today, that resilience is being demonstrated once again by Venezuelan social workers, who are accompanying families with compassion, coordinating local responses, and helping communities rebuild hope. As a region, we stand ready to support our colleagues and strengthen our cooperation in the weeks and months ahead.”
To our colleagues in Venezuela: we see you, we stand with you, and we remain united in our shared commitment to dignity, solidarity and social justice.
