The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) stands in deep solidarity with the people of Sudan during this time of immense hardship and suffering. We grieve the loss of life and the devastation experienced by millions who have been forced to flee their homes. We also pay tribute to social workers and allied professionals who continue to serve with courage, compassion and commitment despite facing overwhelming risks.
We condemn all forms of violence, abuse and discrimination, and we call for the immediate protection of civilians and the restoration of peace. Every person, regardless of their background, has the right to safety, dignity and hope. Social workers across Africa and beyond uphold these values and affirm that peace can only be sustained through dialogue, inclusion and respect for human rights.
We are particularly concerned about the grave humanitarian situation affecting children, women, older persons and persons with disabilities, many of whom face hunger, disease and trauma. The delivery of humanitarian assistance must be safe, unhindered and effective, ensuring that life-saving aid reaches every community in need.
In solidarity with our colleagues and partners in Sudan, IFSW:
- Calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to all attacks on civilians and essential services.
- Urges full, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to deliver food, water, health care and protection services.
- Supports the efforts of Sudanese social workers who continue to provide psychosocial support, protection and community care under extraordinary circumstances.
- Encourages all IFSW member associations to extend practical solidarity through advocacy, technical support, and peer-to-peer collaboration.
- Affirms the resilience of the Sudanese people and their right to rebuild their communities in peace, dignity and justice.
To our colleagues and friends in Sudan: You are not alone. The IFSW stands with you in compassion, solidarity, and hope. Your dedication to serving humanity, even in the darkest times, reflects the highest values of our profession and inspires us all to work for a continent grounded in care, justice and solidarity.
