Power struggles between Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, have resulted in fighting and clashes between Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since the clash broke out on 15 April 2023, foreign governments have been scrambling to evacuate people, prioritising their nationals, and consequently leaving behind locals at the mercy of war, and a lack of basic needs.
IFSW, calls for peace and the restoration of rights for the people of Sudan. IFSW President, Joachim Mumba, and the IFSW Africa regional president, Noel Muridzo, jointly call for the warring parties and their promoters to cease hostilities, and restore and respect the rights of the Sudanese people.
“People are the biggest asset…” they commented, “All governments and political parties must honour and respect people and their safety, or they do not have a legitimate mandate. This conflict represents not just a failure of government in Sudan, but a failure of the international treaties intended to create a peaceful sustainable world that leaves no one behind. People do not want war in their lives. People do not want war in the lives of others. It is time for us all to actively promote ways forward built on the principles of the People’s Charter”.
