The International Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics has released its first issue this year (Volume 22, Issue 1), offering critical insights into some of the most pressing ethical questions facing the profession today. With a continued focus on artificial intelligence (AI), the issue features editorials and articles that challenge practitioners to thoughtfully integrate new technologies while remaining grounded in social work’s core values.
The issue includes editorials by Robert McKinney and Barbara Hiltz that advocate for ethical engagement with AI rather than avoidance, arguing that social workers have a responsibility to help shape technological change rather than react to it. The journal also features important contributions on ethical dilemmas in gender-affirming care, professional conduct beyond working hours, and the limitations of moral frameworks currently guiding practice.
Dr Pascal Rudin, IFSW Interim Secretary-General, who reviewed the book ‘Rights of Nature in Europe’ for this issue, commented: “At a time when our profession is undergoing rapid transformation, this issue of the journal reminds us that ethical discernment is not a static endeavour. From the promise and pitfalls of AI to evolving debates on professional responsibility, we are called not only to adapt, but to lead. These reflections strengthen our collective resolve to uphold human dignity in all its complexity.”
This edition also marks the first issue published under the leadership of Robert McKinney as the journal’s new editor. IFSW extends warm thanks and congratulations to Robert for guiding this important publication into its next chapter.
The journal, published by IFSW, is freely accessible and continues to serve as a vital space for global dialogue on social work ethics, values, and professional integrity. Access the full Issue here.
