In the heart of Zhvanchyk, a transformative project is underway at the local refugee center. The ambitious renovation initiative began with a comprehensive renovation of the facility’s damaged roof. Beyond the restoration of the roof, the renovation extends to crucial repairs, including bathrooms, electrical lighting and flooring.
The Austrian Development Cooperation, Nachbar in Not and Volkshilfe played a key role in financing this endeavor – a project implemented by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW).
Their generous support aims to provide assistance to refugees and vulnerable populations facing difficult circumstances.
The center is situated in a building with a rich history in the village of Zhvanchyk.
Historical accounts reveal the rich heritage of the village of Zhvanchyk, with a wooden church of the Assumption established in 1791 and the consecration of an Uspensky church in 1797. The village, once home to a synagogue, a distillery, a water mill and a hat factory, now it houses the former Helminsky estate, the current building, transformed into a sanctuary recognized as a children’s pulmonology sanatorium.
As of July 1, 2023, the Zhvanchyk center provided shelter to 45 adults, including 31 women and 14 men from conflict-affected areas.
In a proactive measure to facilitate smooth reconstruction, all 45 residents were strategically relocated between July 1 and September 30. The resettlement process involved meticulous planning, with individuals being resettled in eight carefully selected locations tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.
The essential role of social worker communication cannot be overstated in this process. The social worker, employed by IFSW, maintained constant telephone contact with the resettled persons, providing unwavering support and communication. These efforts are geared toward ensuring a smooth transition and addressing any concerns or needs that may arise after relocation.
After renovation, the center is poised to remain a focal point for social and health activities. IFSW is firm in its commitment to train the center’s staff to meet European standards, thus ensuring the provision of optimal services to the residents of the Zhvanchyk centre.
