The Sierra Leone Association of Social Workers (SLASW), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare, successfully hosted the National Social Work Conference 2024 on April 29th at the Tunde Cole Auditorium, Fourah Bay College Campus. The conference, which attracted 238 participants, centered on the theme “A National Conversation on the Regulation of Social Work Practice, Education and Ethical Standards in Sierra Leone.”
Michael Mitchell Conteh, Secretary General of SLASW, emphasised the conference’s pivotal role in enhancing the profession. “This gathering underscores the importance of regulating social work to ensure that our practitioners are well-equipped to meet the diverse needs of our communities with integrity and professionalism. The discussions here today will lay the groundwork for stronger ethical standards and better educational frameworks in our field.”
Oluwatoni Adeleke, IFSW Africa Regional President, highlighted the broader implications for the continent. “Social work is a profession that plays a crucial role in helping individuals and communities overcome challenges. It is imperative that we raise the standards of education, professional development, and self-care for social workers across Africa. By doing so, we not only elevate the profession but also ensure that those in need receive the best possible care and support.”
The conference featured notable speeches, including a keynote address by the Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Melrose Karminty, and various presentations on ethical standards and the proposed Social Work Regulatory Bill. The event concluded with the induction of newly registered members of SLASW and the presentation of awards to outstanding graduates and supporting institutions.
