Social workers from Europe endorse the “Boot Out Austerity marches on – Blackwood to Cardiff, June 2018” and consent to the message sent by social workers.
Ana Radulescu, IFSW European Vice President: today, social workers from BASW became our common voice on making visible the impact of austerity on social work services, social work profession and service users.
The cuts of the social services budget in a time when people are facing a number of changes and challenges have hit the already vulnerable population and increased the number of people living below the poverty line. New forms of poverty and social deprivation arose and proliferated. Children leaving in poverty are the fastest growing segment of the impoverished population with devastating effects on the next generation.
The pressure on families and on children’s social services and social workers is huge. The times demand that we, social workers from all over Europe, endorse our colleagues from BASW, which are calling for the end of austerity measures.
We see the effects of austerity and poverty every day in people’s lives but we also see growing resilience of the people, who make use of social work services.
Ana Radulescu: we send our thanks to all social workers that today are engaged in the “Boot Out Austerity Walk” and we invite people to come and meet the social worker walkers and to walk alongside them.
