‘Using forced starvation as a negotiating tactic in Gaza is brutal inhumanity’, says IFSW Secretary-General Rory Truell.
Recent events in Gaza, in trying to get humanitarian aid to the people who are malnourished, injured and homeless, in this politically driven environment where an entire population is at extreme risk of destruction necessitates this statement from IFSW. These cascading inhuman actions from the 7th October arising from the occupation and control of Gaza are now fuelling antisemitic and Islamophobic behaviours in other countries and increasing world tension.
More than 1.5 million people who are sheltering in southern Gaza, as their last resort after their homes have been bombed, are now at extreme risk of starvation as the Israeli government denies aid to the people. Social workers in Israel, Palestine and worldwide call on the Israeli Government to immediately remove its blockade of aid and medical supplies to Gaza.
The following video was sent to the Secretary-General from a social worker in Gaza showing his home following an indiscriminate bombing. Rory Truell said, “I have known this social worker for more than 10 years. He is like social workers all over the world, kind, thoughtful and respectful of all people. He has been a constant advocate of peace and peaceful relationships. He is now in Rafah hoping his children can survive. If the ground offensive takes place or aid does not quickly arrive, I desperately worry his worst fears will become a reality”.
IFSW stands unwaveringly in agreement with UN leaders, other civil society organisations and various governments that a permanent ceasefire to address the root causes of the conflict enabling each population equal freedoms, rights and sovereignty must be the overarching aim. Yet the tactics of collective punishment including the starving and indiscriminate bombing of entire populations only results in further generations of hate and reprisal.
IFSW President, Joachim Mumba commented, “We are proud that both the Federation’s member organisations living in the conflict have called for equal rights and freedoms for both Palestinians and Israelis.”
IFSW acknowledges that attempts are now being increased by international political leaders to find new ways to get aid into Gaza, yet the Federation is also concerned that some of the same countries are still supplying arms enabling this conflict to continue. We urge members to support our colleagues in this conflict by working with their governments to promote peace and harmony through addressing the root causes and supporting equal rights and self-determination for all peoples in this region.
