The Department of Social Sciences of the Bindura University of Science Education in Zimbabwe in association with the national association of Social Workers and the Council for Social Workers held a successful Social Work day which started with a march from Astra Campus to Bindura Town Civic Centre on 27 April 2012. The event was being held for the first time in Zimbabwe. It was graced by Assistant District Administrator for Bindura District Mr. Muzingaizi who represented Honourable Governor and Resident Minister Advocate Martin Dinha. The Chairperson of the Council of Social Workers and the President of the National Association of Social Workers attended the event.
The event sought to promote and market the social work in Zimbabwe and highlight the importance of social development. The theme for the day was ‘Promoting Socia Work for Zimbabwe’s Social Development’. All speakers emphasized the importance of supporting social work training in Zimbabwe. Mr. Phillip Bhowasi, Chairperson of the Council of Social Workers encouraged social workers to register and reiterated that social work training institutions must work hard to improve social work training. President of the National Association of Social Workers, Mr. Noel Muridzo stressed the need for social workers to strengthen their association. Mr. Jacob Mugumbate, who helped organise the event together with Mr Tawanda Masuka and Mr. Francis Maushe thanked all those who supported the event and promised to have the event on an annual basis. Students, lecturers and social workers in the province were part of the march that included a Salvation Army marching band and a police escort.
