Message for World Social Work Day
17 march 2026
On World Social Work Day, we recognise the vital contribution of social workers in responding to some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
Across the world, communities are experiencing increasing division, uncertainty, and instability. Armed conflicts, economic inequalities, displacement, and social exclusion are affecting millions of people and placing enormous pressure on communities.
In this context, the theme of this year’s World Social Work Day — “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society” — is especially meaningful. It reminds us that hope is not passive; it is created through collective effort and solidarity.
Throughout the Asia-Pacific region, social workers continue to stand with people facing adversity, advocating for justice, dignity, and inclusion. By building connections across communities and strengthening social support systems, social workers play a crucial role in promoting peaceful and resilient societies.
On this day, we honour the commitment and courage of social workers everywhere and reaffirm our shared responsibility to work together for a more just and compassionate world.
Machiko Ohara
President
