This book highlights the many positive developments that have occurred in Botswana on the socio-economic front since independence in 1966. Over the years, the state has demonstrated considerable commitment to prudent macro-economic management and stable governance. This, together with wise stewardship from the leadership, has resulted in strong economic growth and evidence of its being one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. This has, inevitably, also created a variety of interrelated social ills and associated challenges which have brought about a far-reaching transformation of the country’s socio-cultural structures. In response, government, in the context of the Vision 2016 national policy, has made significant strides in addressing issues pertaining to social development in the country. The social work profession has played a critical role in these endeavours. The book considers the various target groups and relevant programmes and initiatives addressing their concerns. Specific issues are covered in an attempt to present an holistic overview of areas of particular concern. These include poverty, community development, counselling, social protection initiatives, child welfare, disaster risk management, the plight of minority groups (including commercial sex workers), female-headed households, and parenting challenges. While content has focused on the needs of students of social work and social development there is no reason why those from cognate disciplines, such as development studies, sociology, and psychology, cannot benefit from the book. Practitioners working with government and nongovernmental and community based organisations will find it invaluable. The same is true of visiting scholars requiring insight into social work and social development in the context of Botswana.
