The Indonesian Professional Social Workers Association (IPSPI) is established by Indonesian social workers as an independent, self-reliant and legally incorporated social worker organisation to improve the competence, career, protection and welfare of its members. All Indonesian social workers are legally obliged to become members of the Social Worker Organisation. The functions of the Social Worker Organisation include the formulation of a code of ethics, the certification of social workers and the taking of the oath of the profession, the issuance of the registration of social workers, and the supervision of the social work practice of social workers. In order to carry out its duties well, the Social Worker Organisation has the authority to establish and enforce a code of ethics, to provide legal assistance, guidance and development, and to impose sanctions for violations. Apart from this, Social Worker Organisations can also cooperate with domestic and foreign institutions to implement social work practices. (Indonesian Law No. 14 of 2019 on Social Workers). On the occasion of the World Social Work Day 2024 on 19 March 2024, a National Convention of Social Workers’ Stakeholders in Indonesia affirmed that IPSPI has the historical antecedents, de facto characteristics and future outlook of the Social Workers’ Organisation as stipulated in the Social Workers’ Law.
