Be the Change

The IFSW Climate Justice Program is a way of being the change that we wish to see in the world. By this, we mean, we will promote and support projects that are creating the positive change that directly and immediately impact communities facing climate injustices.

The first Climate Justice Project supported by the IFSW Climate Justice Program is in Buena Vista, Bolivia: “The Renewable Energy and Empowerment of Quechua Women”. Eventually, there will be several projects running in the five regions of the world, such as a women’s entrepreneurial project creating solar powered lamps to improve educational outcomes and health and well-being, or water protection and purification projects. The application process for project funding will be announced soon. Inquiries may be made to

How can I become involved in the IFSW Climate Justice Program?
The IFSW Climate Justice Program is for anyone and everyone– social workers, friends, family, colleagues, companies, universities, etc. Please help us share it widely!
The primary aim of the IFSW Climate Justice Program is to help us all be the change we wish to see in the world. We first do this by becoming more mindful of the injustices created by our consumption patterns, so we will be empowered and encouraged to make lifestyle changes and advocate for policy changes. Thus, we encourage everyone to look at the  “Tips for Shrinking Your Ecological Footprint” and resources.

Next, the IFSW Climate Justice Program offers an ecological footprint calculator which can be used to determine one’s estimated travel related carbon emissions which contributes to the climate injustices in the world. Then, a formula is used to create a suggested donation amount based on your carbon emissions. You are welcome to contribute this suggested amount, or you may opt to contribute more or less than the suggested amount. Currently, this is limited to travel impact at this point, but you may want to consider the broader ways your consumption patterns create impact on people and planet. This is a tool for educating us and helping us be more mindful, this is not intended as a way to make us feel less guilty so that we continue in our unsustainable patterns of consumption. There are other tools out there, and we encourage you to also look at them to learn more about your ecological footprint.

How will my contribution be used?
100% of the donations will be used to fund projects across the five IFSW regions of the world, as well as to promote the ongoing education, outreach, and advocacy of the IFSW Climate Justice Program. In each of these projects social workers assist community members in researching, identifying and addressing the climate justice concerns in their local communities. Each of these projects are vetted by the IFSW Climate Justice Program leadership  and impact  will be measured and presented with complete transparency.  You can select which of the active projects you would like your contribution to go to, or select that it be spread evenly among all active projects.
